On Saturday 17th February we wlcomed the Organ Club to St Mary's church, to view, to listen and to play the newly restored Walker organ. Between 70 and 80 members of the club visited St Mary's on a day visit looking at organs of note near to St Albans. An introductory talk was given by John Shepherd, who had recently helped to restore the Walker organ to its former glory. He told how in 2004 there had been about 30 working pipes on the great and only 16 working on the swell. He told how the old tracker system had been removed and replaced with an electrical action and how the choir that had been prepared for was now coupled to the Great and Swell to allow it to be used.
After his introduction, Simon Pusey, played a short piece of Bach to show the full flavour of the stops on the organ. Then the mbers spent some time looking in detail at the organ and some eminent organists played to the delight of the other members.
