Who we are Have a look at the Friends website
The Friends of St Mary’s is a charitable organisation (Charity Number 284457) whose main objective is to raise funds for the maintenance and preservation of the historic building of St Mary’s Church. Members of the Friends are drawn from the congregation, from Hemel Hempstead in general as well from across the UK. Indeed, we welcome as a member anybody with an interest in helping to preserve the fabric of this beautiful Norman Church.
What we’ve done
Since the formation of the Friends in 1980 a number of projects have been completed. The most significant of these being the appeal for renovating and releading the spire. This work began in 1984 and was completed in 1987. The final work being completed and funded for using a loan from Dacorum Borough Council which the Friends finished paying off in October 2001.
More recently repairs to two faces of the tower were completed in 1994 with work on the two remaining faces being completed in 2000.
In addition the Friends fund a range of smaller but essential fabric repairs.
Fundraising
The Friends organise regular fund-raising events the largest of which is ‘ Art in the Nave’, a major exhibition and sale of art works by local artists held in the Church. Other typical events include Antiques Valuations, Quiz and Games Evenings and our Annual Dinner.
The Friends used to run a Coffee Shop in St Mary’s Church Hall next to the Church every Saturday morning but no more.
